My own story began when I was 19 years old. As a Sophomore in college, I found a quarter sized, smooth, bald spot at the back of my head. It worried me, but I was able to hide it well beneath my long, thick hair. When another, and then another appeared, I decided it was time to find a doctor. Thus began a series of what seemed to be an unending experiment of creams, ointments, pills, and injections. Nothing worked. By the age of 21 I had to buy my first wig.
I was devastated! I had always been a person of faith, so this was an important time of personal and spiritual growth for me.
My first wig was synthetic and stiff. It had metal clips that snapped on to any existing hair. I will never forget the day I kept making the security lights go off at the airport on my way to see my parents in Chile, where they were missionaries. They finally had to scan me with a hand held machine and the beeping was on my head! I was embarrassed to say the least…
After a few bad hairpieces, I finally found one that I thought was a step-up. Instead of having netting as a base, it was actually a hard plastic much like a helmet. I was excited to try it but found it to be hot and uncomfortable. As soon as I started sweating, the darned thing would start to swim around my head! I have always enjoyed playing sports, but the day I jumped up and turned in mid air to make a basketball shot, and my hair kept going when the rest of me didn’t… well, it was time to continue my search…
It wasn’t until I was married and teaching a room full of first graders that a miracle took place… I found Freedom Wigs! I frankly could not believe the difference… this was not just a step up; it was a giant leap that took me soaring high above any other product I had ever tried. The incredible security the vacuum offered me… the natural beauty of strong, healthy, real human hair… the ability to style it and change it as I wished… I just couldn’t put it into words, only tears. I could swim again, hug my students without fear, ride roller coasters, go to the beach, enjoy a windy day… it meant life, and joy, and freedom…
That was over 16 years ago… My life is full to the brim with the joy and laughter of my four children, whom I homeschool; the steadfast love of a husband who adores me with or without hair; of friends who know I have alopecia, but don’t even remember… I could never go back to anything else… how could I?
